Registration certificate

For an EU citizen, the registration certificate is not a condition of their stay in the Czech Republic, therefore it is up to them whether they request this certificate be issued or not.

A registration certificate is issued at the request of an EU citizen who intends to stay in the Czech Republic for more than 3 months and has not threatened state security or seriously disrupted public order.

The application for issuing a registration certificate residence is filled on the appropriate form ("Application for a registration certificate for EU citizens"), on MOI office in the Czech Republic. It is recommended to submit the application on relevant MOI office according to your place of residence.
 

Application requirements:

If it concerns a family member of an EU citizen, who himself/herself is an EU citizen and he/she intends to temporarily stay in the Czech Republic for a period longer than 3 months together with an EU citizen, the application for issuance of a registration certificate shall be supported by:

The requirements for the application shall not be older than 180 days with the exception of the travel document, public documents (i. e. a birth certificate, marriage notarial act etc.) and the photograph of the applicant if it corresponds to his/her actual appearence. All the documents have to be submitted in originals or notarized copies. Travel document and public documents must be allways submitted in the original.

All of the presented documents have to be made out in the Czech language or Slovak language or officially translated into Czech. Documents made out in other languages will be accepted without an official translation  just in cases defined by the Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 of the European Parliament and the Council. This applies mainly to the public documents issued by the Member States' authority to citizens of this Member State and accompanied by a multilingual standard form. All the other documents have to be submitted in original with an official translation to Czech. Translation of public documents could be made by a person registered in the list of interpreters in accordance to the Section 16(3) of the Administrative Procedure Code or by a person registered in the list of qualified persons to carry out certified translations to the Czech in the other Member State, in accordance with national law, in accordance to the Regulation (EU) 2016/1191.

The application is processed without undue delay, within 30 days of initiating the process at the latest.
 

In the case of a positive decision, the applicant is invited in writing or by telephone by the MOI office to pick up the registration certificate. This certificate is issued on ten years from the day of issue. The validity of registration certificate for an EU citizen cannot be extended. In case foreign national does not apply for permanent residence permit for an EU citizen and the validity of registration certificate for an EU citizen ends, it is necessary to apply for a new registration certificate for an EU citizen.

For clarification it should be stated that up until August 1st, 2021 the registration certificate was called the confirmation of temporary residence. From August 2nd, 2021 issued confirmations of temporary residence are considered to be registration certificates and remain valid until the end of their validity.

Ministry of the Interior wants to inform you that validity of all certificates of temporary residence for an EU citizen issued before January 1st, 2010 ends from December 31st, 2019. The validity of all certificates of temporary residence for an EU citizen issued after December 31st, 2019 will be ten years.

In the case of a positive decision, the Ministry of the Interior applies for a personal identity number issuance automatically. Then, after the personal identity number will be issued, it will be allocated to the foreigner. The allocation of the personal identity number does not concern foreigners whom this number has already been allocated, including citizens of the Slovak Republic who were born until 1993.
