What are groups of thematic records?
Groups of thematic registration are the terms denoting common traits of a certain type of archive groups. As a rule the terms semantically superior are concerned, more general than the names of individual fonds. Individual archive fonds and groups are ranked in one or several groups of thematic records. Such groups have the advantage of helping us search for archive files of the relevant group jointly, without even knowing e.g. the precise name of a fond. If e.g. searching for all archive fonds related to coal mining, we enter the group 150111 Dobývání a úprava uhlí (doly, briketárny, koksárny a pod.) [150111 Mining and preparation of coal (mines, briquette plants, coke plants etc.)]. It is also possible to enter a more general group 150100 Doly, hutě, těžba ropy a zemního plynu [150100 Mines, ironworks, oil and natural gas production] or an even more general group 150000 Podniky [150000 Enterprises]. The most general groups are called primary groups of thematic records and are further split in subgroups according to detailed specification. In our example 150000 Enterprises was the primary group, 150100 subgroup and 150111 lower (subordinate) sub-subgroup.
The search by groups of thematic records can be combined with other conditions. If e.g. searching for fonds related to coal mining at Kladno, we enter group 150111 Dobývání a úprava uhlí (doly, briketárny, koksárny a pod.) [150111 Mining and preparation of coal (mines, briquette plants, coke plants etc.)], with place of origin Kladno.
