People from Western Europe are more pessimistic about the future than in any other region in the World, a new survey has shown. A global survey of 50,000 people in over 60 countries by the World Economic Forum shows that a majority of Europeans (55 percent) believes that the next generation will live in a less safe world.

Although this percentage has declined since last year, Europeans are still ahead of their closest competitors in the pessimism stakes, people from the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Amongst Europeans, Germans are the most pessimistic, with 63 percent believing that the next generation will live in a less safe world.

Political failings
Despite this pessimism, Europeans are the most tolerant of politicians' failings. The report says, "Overall, Western Europe is more tolerant of their politicians than some other regions". In this respect, Europeans bucked the global trend, as politicians were roundly criticised for their failings in other parts of the world. However, Polish people were sharply critical of politicians' dishonesty, with 90 percent complaining that their leaders are dishonest. At the other end of the scale, only 12 percent of Dutch people felt their politicians were dishonest.
