Balkans start on road to EU membership (I)

Just a few years after the region was devastated by conflicts, leaders of the Western Balkans came together for an important summit both to pledge their path into the European Union and to have it confirmed by EU leaders. Speaking at a special summit for Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro at the Thessaloniki council (21 June), Commission President Romano Prodi said "the process of European unification will not be completed unless the countries of the Western Balkans become members of the European Union". Costas Simitis, Greek prime minister, said "we consider the accession of the Balkan countries to the EU to be a necessity".
to come together – sejít se both …and - jednak…a jednak to pledge – slíbit, zaručit path – cesta to confirm – potvrdit Montenegro – Černá Hora unification – sjednocení unless – dokud ne, jestliže ne to consider – považovat accession – přijetí necessity - nutnost

Greece, currently at the helm of the EU presidency wanted, as one of its main presidency aims, to make the Union focus on the area. EU leaders believe that offering eventual EU membership will help to stabilise the region which saw massive conflict during the 1990s. A diplomat told the EU observer, "I can’t stress the importance of this summit enough. It is about getting the representatives into the same room together and talking.
