In April protesters on a hunger strike against the Czech nuclear power station in Temelín have finally met with a representative of the Austrian government in Vienna. The state secretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Ursula Haubner, who is the sister of the former head of the extreme right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ) Jörg Haider, came to support the protesters. "I think it is right to support the activists' work," Haubner told ČTK after a half-hour interview with two of the three hunger strikers in one of the caravans parked near the federal chancellor's office. Haubner emphasised that until recently she had been the head of the environmental department of the regional government Upper Austria, which is officially opposed to Temelín.
hunger strike - hladovka (strike - stávka) nuclear power station - jaderná elektrárna former - bývalý head - hlava (i v přen. smyslu) right - wing - pravicový (wing - křídlo) chancellor - kancléř to emphasise - zdůraznit department - ministerstvo, resort Upper Austria - Horní Rakousko to oppose to - být proti čemu
Haubner said her support of the hunger strike was reflected in the federal government's programme, pointing out the cabinet's efforts to push for the shut-down of the South Bohemian power station and enforcing the Czech-Austrian Melk agreement on increasing safety in Temelín. Haubner promised nuclear energy opponents that she would discuss the hunger strike with chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel at a governmental session.
to reflect - odrážet se to point out - poukázat na, zdůraznit effort - snaha, úsilí to push for - snažit se o to enforce - vynutit, vymáhat, increasing - vzrůstající to promise - slíbit governmental session - vládní zasedání
"We are expecting strong pressure on the government," said Andreas Reimer, one of the three protesters. He does not view the promise to publish the report as sufficient cause for ceasing the hunger strike. The well-built Reimer looked evidently fresher than his rather thin colleague Alois Lengauer, who had allegedly lost 20 kilograms during this year's hunger strikes. The third participant in the hunger strike, Thomas Neff, left for his home in Salzburg. A female participant, Irene Winkler, finished her protest after she physically collapsed.
to view - považovat, prohlížet sufficient - dostatečný cause - důvod to cease - ukončit at least - přinejmenším well - built - dobře stavěný, urostlý thin - hubený, tenký allegedly - údajně to leave for - odejet kam physically - tělesně to collapse - zhroutit se
