Extending the validity of a residence card

An application for extending the validity of a residence card (hereinafter a “card”) is submitted to the MOI office based on your address on the relevant application form.

EU citizens or their family members must submit an application for extending the validity of a residence card within 15 days of it expiring.

If a foreign national is prevented from applying for an extension of the card’s validity within the legally required period due to reasons outside of his/her control, he/she must apply for an extension of the card’s validity within 3 working days of these reasons ending. The foreign national must prove these reasons. If the application is not submitted within the legally required period and there is no obstacle that is outside of the foreign national’s control, the delay in submitting the application for extending the validity of the card will be judged as a violation and a fine can be imposed.

When submitting an application for extending the validity of a permanent residence card issued to EU citizens or their family members, the foreign national provides:

When submitting an application for extending the validity of a temporary residence card for a family member of an EU citizen, the foreign national provides:

If it concerns:

  • an EU citizen who holds a “Permanent Residence Card for an EU Citizen” (Průkaz o povolení k trvalému pobytu občana EU),
  • an EU citizen who holds a “Residence Card for a National of a European Community Member State” (Průkaz o povolení k pobytu pro státního příslušníka členského státu Evropských společenství) (the old purple permit),
  • a family member of an EU citizen, who is not an EU citizen and who holds a “Permanent Residence Card” (Průkaz o povolení k trvalému pobytu),
  • a citizen of Norway, Lichtenstein, Iceland or Switzerland or a family member who holds a “Residence Card for a Foreign National” (Průkaz o povolení k pobytu pro cizince),
  • a family member of an EU citizen, who is not an EU citizen and who holds a “Residence Card for a Family Member of an EU Citizen” (Průkaz o pobytu rodinného příslušníka občana EU),

The extension of the permit’s validity will be indicated in the current permit. If the citizen of the EU, Norway, Lichtenstein, Iceland or Switzerland or his/her family member holds a different permit to the abovementioned, the MOI will issue a new kind of permit.

The application can be submitted on behalf of a foreign national by a different person on the basis of a power of attorney. The power of attorney must demonstrate that it was signed for this specific purpose. The signatures on the power of attorney do not have to be notarized. If the application is not filed by the foreign national in person and it is necessary to issue a new residence card, the foreign national will be invited to collect it in person.
