The Policeman  1/2001

A monthly magazine of the Ministry of the Interior of Czech Republic Department of Crime Prevention

A report from a section of the Department of Connections and Computer Science of the Ministry of the Interior. This particular section is dedicated to creating, developing and filling the web-pages of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, the Police of the Czech Republic and the Fire Brigade. The pages of the Ministry of the Interior are among the most frequently visited pages of state authorities and organizations. The magazine Policista, for example, can be found there, and over 50 thousand visitors read from its computerized version. Some of the information is also available in English.

As a part of the regular column Questions for… we turn this time to Stanislav Gross, the Minister of the Interior. We ask about the PHARE 98 project, about the reform of the state executive and about his opinion regarding the attitudes of our citizen to the Police. The Minister also answers a question about the influence of crime prevention on the decrease of crime, especially in relation to teenagers, and through the mediation of our magazine he expresses his thanks to the policemen for the work they have done: "I know that an overwhelming majority of these people does not see their work as a job but rather as a vocation. They spend a lot of their free time on it, often at the expense of their families or their personal interests. I would like to thank them sincerely …"

At the beginning of the year, we talk to Brigadier General JUDr. Jiří Kolář about the work of the Police of the Czech Republic, its priorities that were or were not brought off last year, about the crime-rate, and about the attitude of the general public to the police, in our regular column The Word of the Police President.

Foreign pages mention among others an Internet program that the Chicago Police Department offers to citizens, including maps of crime occurrence.

A good-natured homely type
The murder of an old lady during the festive time of the end of the year was difficult to solve. There were few clues, but careful analysis, as well as cooperation with the public, resulted in catching the peculiar impostor.

We visited five places in the town of Svitavy. It is a town which only entered the Complex Cooperative Program of Crime Prevention in 1999, but it had been examining the crime rate and prevention for a long time. Our first visit was to the newly opened dormitory for the homeless. The second was to a representative of the town police, who is also a member of the Commission for Crime Prevention. We further spoke to the director and pupils of a local primary school at the Club F, situated at the bunker of the school, in the housing development. Next, we were told at the Police of the Czech Republic department that they were preparing projects such as A car is no safe-deposit, Stop 24, and regular preventive activities in the area of holiday homes. Our fifth visit was to see old as well as newly built playgrounds and sports areas around the town of Svitavy.

Visiting the police department in Chotěboř
The report describes the achievements of police work in the country - in the central part of the Czech Republic. Success in detecting trespassers who committed burglary in holiday homes or cars etc. depends mainly on detailed knowledge of the local living conditions.

A Portrait
The text describes a hobby of the policeman from the Railway Police Section. Collecting badges and sew-on shoulder signs of foreign police departments not only shows Mr Musil's attitude to his own work, but it often means better professional orientation in the subject of police activities.

We introduce the spa recreational house Mercur in Mariánské Lázně to our readers not only as a place suited for treatment of various illnesses, but a place truly recommendable for recreation and relaxation.

The PHARE 98 project includes twelve modules, which we would like to introduce, one in each of this year's issues of the magazine Policista. The program deals with the complex system of the management of human resources within the Police of the Czech Republic, and with the program of professional training of policemen and employees of the Ministry of the Interior.

A Bottomless Pit
An archival story about a murder, which was to be covered by a pool at the bottom of our country's deepest chasm, near the village of Hranice na Moravě.

Hopeful prospects for Sysyfos
A report from the work of the Railway Police section, which has in recent years undergone considerable reduction and reformation, but whose tasks are no less numerable: watching over the safety of parcels and passangers, as well as the protection of the possessions of Czech Railways from vandals. It is becoming a more and more significant task of the railway police to watch over excesses of bewildered sports fans.

The magazine includes two supplements. One contains useful information about the European Union.. The second supplement talks about safety aspects of the European Football Championship, from the point of view of the delegation of the Ministry of the Interior and the Police of the Czech Republic at EURO 2000.
