The issue came to the headlines in February when the European People's Party (EPP) passed a resolution calling on those looking for political posts in the EU to "disclose their professional and political activities in former communist states". The resolution goes on to ask them to refrain from taking political posts in the EU "if they formed part of the repressive Communist enforcement agencies, or were involved in crimes against humanity". The move by the EPP, which is the biggest political group in the European Parliament, followed pressure by several observer MPs from the new member states themselves - who will also be present at the hearing this week.
