Malta and Cyprus ”overlooked” in Prague meeting

Malta and Cyprus, two small countries acceding to the EU this year, were not invited to attend an autumn meeting in Prague, ahead of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC), due to an "oversight". "They said they forgot to invite us", a spokesperson for the Cyprus Representation to the EU told the EUobserver, although he added that the Czech government reassured them that this mistake was not going to be repeated.

Czech Foreign Affairs Minister also made an informal apology to his Maltese counterpart, at the informal EU foreign ministers meeting in Riva del Garda, Italy, as the papers reported. The incident raised numerous questions for the Maltese opposition, who demanded answers from the government about why the island was not invited to the meeting. "I hope that's not the shape of things to come", the Malta Labour Party spokesperson on EU affairs told.

However, while the newspaper said that the mistake resulted from short notice changes to the programme, sources close to the Czech Representation to the EU told the EUobserver that the omission of the two countries was due to their lack of participation in similar meetings held during the work of the Convention. In Prague, 15 small and medium-sized current and future EU members, including Poland – the biggest acceding state - discussed a common position ahead of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC). They agreed that every EU member state should continue having a Commissioner and that the EU Presidency should be kept on rotation.
