Eastern Europeans flock to the UK (Part 1)

Vyšlo v čísle 7/2006

After EU enlargement an average of 16,000 eastern Europeans are arriving each month in the UK to work. This is much more than expected ahead of enlargement, with a government study last year forecasting an annual total of just 5,000 to 13,000 workers. But multicultural Britain has so far been able to absorb all the newcomers, reports the New York Times.

The new arrivals even seem to have strengthened the economy with the unemployment rate still as low as 4.7 percent. Most of the old EU countries, in contrast to the UK, have sealed off their labour markets ahead of enlargement as they suffer high unemployment. To work in France, for example, a Pole must apply for a work permit. France issued 737 such permits to Poles in the ten months after the enlargement, equivalent to the number of Poles who arrive every two days in Britain, according to the US newspaper.

According to statistics released in June, around 232,000 applicants from the eight countries - Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the three Baltic states - have registered under a special scheme in the UK.
It was set up shortly before the May 2004 enlargement because of fears about possible abuse of the country's social benefit system. The newcomers generally work as bus drivers, waitresses and builders. However, the UK government says it still has shortages of 600,000 workers in fields like nursing and construction.
