What can be found in the database?

 

The database consists of entries with name of the fond (archive group), name of the archives wherein the relevant archives fond (archive group) is deposited, footage of the fond (archive group), place(es) of origin of the fond, name of the originator in the original language and wording, time extent of the fond and finding aids available at the archives where the fond is stored.

The database contains entries about 162 066 archive groups (802 594,74 running metres of historical records and documents) and 166 821 finding aids. These archive groups are deposited in the  National Archive, in 7 public regional archives (in 2002 also 72 public district archives were incorporated but retained their names), in 5 municipal archives, in several dozens of specialized and private archives, in the so-called cultural/scientific institutions (museums, libraries, galleries, branches of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, universities) and also in the hands of legal entities or natural persons (historical records and documents deposited outside the archives).

On the sites with the results of search you can find retrieved records with this data:

  • Name of the fond (archive group) - Czech fond names are based on the latest official or otherwise commonly used names of their originators.
  • Deposited in the archives - given is the name of the archives or cultural/scientific institution where the archive group is deposited.
  • Place of origin of the fond (archive group) - the place or places is/are given of origin of the fond (archive group). The place of origin need not be given at personal fonds and groups that directly originated in the relevant archive.
  • Time extent - the lower (older) and upper (younger) time limits of the records are given, i.e. the periods from which the records of the said fond date.
  • Footage - the number of so-called shelve meters (bm) of the fond records is given. This item indicates the extent and accessibility of the fond. Records in the archives are measured in metres. At individual archive fonds and groups the footage is given in the terms unarranged, arranged and thereof inventoried. Total extent of the fonds is the sum of the unarranged and arranged footage.
  • Accessibility - for researchers the data what is given here about accessibility, which may be of the type:
    • Accessible
    • Partially accessible
    • Inaccessible
    It is just a tentative item - the accessibility should be consulted with the relevant archive.
  • Originator of the fond (archive group) (agency) - the name (names) is (are) given of the originator (originators) with the period during which the name was used.
  • Thematic description - contains information about the contents of an archive group; primarily to which sphere of historical research the archive group refers, reminders of its most important part or most valuable records and basic types of archived material, e.g. the type of official books. Where sheet music is entered as a file, the data is given on the occurrence of sheet music. This box should be filled in at processed archive files.
  • Finding aids - citation of the finding aid is given containing the following data: name(s) of the author(s), aid name, time extent of the aid, aid type, year of aid issue, registration number of the aid in the relevant archive.
    At comprehensive and group inventories (finding aids for several fonds) the result contains the number of the inventory list relating to the retrieved fond. This item is given in the form: number_archive_aid/number_inventory_list.

Detailed information on the relevant archive fond (archive group) can only be obtained from the archives (institution), where the fond (archive group) is stored.
